Premium Multifocal Intraocular Lenses Questions
Austin, Texas

If you are suffering from cataracts or presbyopia, a multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) is an excellent solution. Cataracts and presbyopia are two entirely different eye conditions, but they both involve the eye’s crystalline lens.

What is a multifocal IOL?

A multifocal IOL is an intraocular lens is an artificial lens that replaces your natural lens that can focus on more than one distance. Intraocular lenses used to only allow patients to see at one fixed distance, such as with monovision. IOLs are used in patients whose natural lens is clouded by a cataract, have presbyopia, or with those who may not be candidates for laser correction surgery.

Can multifocal IOLs give me perfect vision?

Although multifocal IOLs can greatly improve your vision, there may be some drawbacks. Night vision can be compromised through glares and halos, so they are not recommended for people who need to drive a lot at night. If you have astigmatism that is not easily corrected with laser correction surgery or another procedure, you have other eye problems or diseases, have a low or moderate degree of nearsightedness, or have had perfect vision your entire life until your 40s, you may not be a good candidate for multifocal IOLs, or may be greatly disappointed in them.

Are there different kinds of multifocal IOLs?

Multifocal IOLs are different, depending on if you have cataracts or presbyopia. Each multifocal IOL is designed to give you clear vision at near, middle, and far distances, but they differ in how this is accomplished. The two kinds offered by Howerton Eye Clinic are the premium multifocal ReZoom™ Intraocular Lenses and ReSTOR® Intraocular Lenses.

Am I a good candidate for multifocal IOLs?

Good candidates for premium multifocal IOLs are those who:

  • Have realistic expectations
  • Are younger patients with good general health and are active
  • Have hyperopia (farsightedness) or presbyopia
  • Have high or severe myopia (nearsightedness)

You should discuss your options and your candidacy with Dr. Berkowitz during your consultation.
