Howerton Eye Center is pleased to welcome John Nicolau, M.D. to our practice. Dr. Nicolau brings with him the most up to date training available. Dr. Nicolau will specialize in both general and surgical eye care.
After completing his medical degree at the Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas, Dr. Nicolau went on to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas for an internship. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Texas Tech Department of Ophthalmology in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. Nicolau has been honored with the following awards: Texas A&M University Dean’s List, Distinguished Student Award, Academic Excellence Scholarship, and Delta Tau Delta Kershner Scholar Award. During his internship and residency, he not only studied and performed various surgeries, but he also presented on topics such as Radiation Retinopathy, Dry Eye Syndrome. Sympathetic Ophthalmia, Ischemic Optic Neuropathy, Hypotension and Vision Loss, Third Nerve Palsy, Conjunctivitis, HCRVO and HSV Keratitis. His surgical training also included specialized training in cataract surgery, refractive surgery (both LASIK and PRK), retina procedures, and oculosplastics (blepharoplasty, ptosis, and a variety of lid malpositions). Dr. Nicolau is trained in Botox injections as well.
Dr. Nicolau’s community contributions include: Volunteering at the Women’s Healthcare Center: Free Clinic for Women, Adopt a Street Cleanup, Big Brothers Program: Mentor for lower level medical student and Pediatrics Club member: Organization surrounding underprivileged kids.
Dr. Nicolau, his wife, Kayla, and their son, Reid recently relocated to Austin. His other passion in life is deep-sea fishing. He has traveled to places such as Hawaii, Costa Rica, Mexico and others to explore fishing opportunities. Dr. Nicolau is also an avid Atlanta Braves fan and has been for 20 years. He rarely misses a game. Tennis played a big part of his life growing up; he traveled the State of Texas to achieve a state ranking.
Dr. Nicolau believes hard work will develop a well rounded individual. It is his desire to achieve and maintain a successful patient population and ophthalmology practice. |
